Through rugged landscape and coastal beauty, discover the best of McLaren Vale Walking Trails

Are you planning a trip to the Fleurieu Peninsula? Want to explore the best of McLaren Vale’s exciting wine trails and scenic walks? Then this is the guide for you. In this article, we are covering the best of McLaren Vale’s walking trails. Whether you’re looking to bike, hike or stroll around, these options should definitely be on your list for your next visit to this amazing wine region.

Located 40-minutes from Adelaide, McLaren Vale is one of the most-visited regions of the Fleurieu Peninsula. Despite being close to its coastal towns, McLaren Vale still feels miles apart from all the hustle & bustle the region boasts. It’s a peaceful destination where you can hang around, chill, and have a great time with your friends and families. But that’s not all!

Fringed by bushland, vineyards, scenic trails, cellar doors, and award-wining restaurants – McLaren Vale is a perfect paradisical place for all food & wine lovers. So, along with exploring the outdoor activities, you can treat yourselves to great culinary products. I mean, who doesn’t get hungry after a tiresome hike, right?

5 Scenic McLaren Vale Walking Trails

From walking and bush-hiking to exploring the scenic coastal trails, these are some of the wine region’s best McLaren Vale walking trails.

Willunga Basin Trail

Willunga Basin Trail is one of the fantastic walking trails of McLaren Vale. This 130km ultimate stretch winds through a varietal landscape the Fleurieu Peninsula boasts. From the greens of bushland and forests to the colours of vineyards and almond parks, Willunga Basil Trail is a must-visit stretch in this region.

Since the path is long, you can complete the trail either in 5 days or 11 days. This entirely depends on your fitness levels, as you need a moderate physique to walk this trail. However, if you prefer to do only a specific portion, then it’s best recommended to walk from Maslin Beach to McLaren Vale, covering Seaford and Willunga in between. You can cover this tiny portion within 4-5 hours.

McLaren Vale Cellar Door Tree Trail

McLaren Vale is not only about wineries and culinary tales but also about the sustainability and conservation of the trees surrounding the region. To educate more on this to tourists, a partnership was formed between McLaren Vale and Willunga Environment Centre to create an interesting trail called McLaren Vale Cellar Door Tree Trail. The pathway connects 14 wine cellar doors, along with 54 tagged trees.

These tagged forests mention the tree’s age, height, and unique characteristics. This makes it interesting for travellers to learn more about the forest’s diversity harbouring in the McLaren region. Also, the cellar doors you visit during this trail are worth stopping by. Some of these include Paxton Wines, Chalk Hill Wines, Samson Tall Wines, and Gemtree Wines.

Flat to McLaren Vale Trail

Flat to McLaren is best suited for families travelling with kids, youth, and senior citizens. It’s a friendly-walkable trail connecting McLaren Flat and McLaren Vale, and it’s a newly constructed track, which now sees a frequent hustle of tourists from all over Australia.

Stretching up to 3.6kms in length, the entire path of Flat to McLaren Vale is flat, connecting different townships based between McLaren Flat and Vale. It also connects the Coast to Vines Trail, including the famous path Shiraz Trail. This makes it super convenient for runners and cyclists to explore other routes within the McLaren Vale wine region.

Shiraz Trail

Shiraz Trail is the best walking trail in the entire McLaren region. Being one of the most well-known paths, Shiraz Trail runs from McLaren to Willunga via an 8km track. The trail is best suited for walking and cycling both. Interestingly, the track was previously used as a rail corridor. However, considering its locality, the stretch got constructed into a beautiful path today.

Shiraz Trail is a relatively flat-surfaced and easy-to-walk. Since it is best suited for all age groups, the path can get crowded with tourists during Australia’s summer and autumn seasons. However, baring the crowd scene, the Shiraz is one of the best to provide scenic vineyard views of the entire McLaren Vale. During your exploration, you’ll come across many wine cellar doors which are worth visiting. Some of these include Serafino WinesBattle of Bosworth, and Hardys Wines.

If you’re cycling the path on an early Saturday morning, then don’t forget to hit the famous Willunga Farmers Market. You can shop local produce, artisan food, and varietals of cheeses, meats and breads here.

Ocean to Vines Rail Trail

Ocean to Vines is one of the best McLaren Vale walking trails if you prefer to see a range of diverse attractions. Winding alongside the coastal beauty of Marino, the trail stretches up to 38kms in length, traversing between coastal suburbs and towns. It’s interesting to see how the landscape changes throughout the trail as you venture more and more inner sections of McLaren.

Ocean to Vines Rail Trail starts at Marina and ends in Willunga. It’s a shared path that both cyclists and walkers can access. As you begin your journey, you’ll hut some of the Fleurieu Peninsula’s best coastal quaint such as Hallett Cove, Morphett Vale, Seaford Rise and Hackham.

The Shiraz Trail is a shorter section of the Ocean to Vines Rail Trail. So, it makes sense to take the latter one to explore more attractions and activities along your way. Furthermore, it also connects other trails such as Christies Creek Trail and Field River Trail.

Come, explore the Australian paradise in our 7 days in the Whitsundays

Stretched-out coastlines, white-sandy beaches, turquoise blue waters, and rich marine life – defines the beauty of the Whitsunday Islands. Home to 74 islands, the Whitsundays is one of Australia’s most ever-green paradises. From snorkelling the crystal clear waters of the barrier reef to feeling the luxury essence of Hamilton Island, there’s a lot to see and discover at the Whitsundays.

In this article, we’ve curated an in-depth guide to the Whitsunday Islands. These include understanding the islands, why you need to visit them, best day trips, excursions, and amazing sailing tips & ideas. Along with these resources, I’ve designed a perfect itinerary for 7 days in the Whitsundays. The trip will journey to unique bay areas, islands, protected zones, snorkelling & scuba-diving sites.

About Whitsunday Islands in Australia

The Whitsundays is a large collection of 74 tropical islands based on the Great Barrier Reef. Located 55kms from the central coast of Queensland, it’s one of Australia’s most popular tourist destinations. Today, visitors travel from all over the world to witness what a marvel Whitsunday is. It’s truly an astonishing place that tops everyone’s travel bucket list.

Now, you don’t have to visit all 74 islands in one go. Of course, that’s nearly impossible unless you make this your ‘to-do’ list. However, there are a few islands that definitely stand out from the tourism point of view.

First is Hayman Island because of its luxurious inland property – InterContinental Hayman Island Resort. Hayman is definately the place for you if you fancy living up at Whitsundays private island. Next is Hamilton Island, which is more popular due to accessibility via flights to major cities. Most of the catamaran cruises and private charters depart to this island from Airlie Beach. Last but not the least, Whitsunday Island , which is home to one of the world’s most iconic beache – Whitehaven.

Most of the islands harbouring at the Whitsundays are designated national parks. So you can expect all beaches to be clean and pristine. What’s more, is that the waters provide a great opportunity for surfers and divers.

Why Visit the Whitsundays

The Whitsunday Islands brims with rich marine and great aquatic treasures. Before my trip, I felt this place was too good to be true. I had seen many pictures online but always felt, ‘Oh, this is just another island’. But, honestly? I am glad I got proved wrong. The Whitsundays are not your ordinary-so-called-beach-islands. It’s more of a magical place, where you say, ‘Oh, this is simply a paradise’.

If this is your first trip to Australia, and you’re deciding which places to keep and skip off the itinerary – then take my advice and never exclude the Whitsundays. Especially when you’re in Queensland, you’ve got to visit this bunch of tropical islands. Whitsunday bustles with white-sandy beaches, striking turquoise waters, rich flora and fauna, and amazing water sports. From swimming to surfing and kayaking, everything is possible at the Whitsundays.

You just need to be ready for the adventure!

Overview of 7 Days in the Whitsundays

From feeling the purest sands of Whitehaven to snorkelling the beaches of Hamilton, our Whitsundays itinerary explores some of the region’s best attractions and experiences. The intention of curating this trip was to include more discoveries, niche activities and unique tours to help you plan a perfect vacation to the Whitsundays. While a week-long trip sounds fun, it even gets better when you hop-on-hop-off various islands in the Whitsundays.

Ideally, you require a minimum of 4 days to explore the beauty of the Whitsunday Islands. A four-day trip is more than sufficient to experience what the fuss is all about. However, with a 7-day trip, you get to visit more islands.

If that’s what you prefer, then this trip is for you!

Planning Tips for 7 Days in the Whitsundays

Now that you know what Whitsundays are and why you need to visit them let’s dig deeper into the essential planning tips.

There are plenty of ways to explore the Whitsunday Islands. The first is an ordinary tour, where you book a certain 4-day or 7-day package. The other is a private journey, where you book a bareboat sailing trip. With a bareboat itinerary – you get the flexibility & freedom of sailing anywhere across the islands. This is ideally great for families & youth looking to venture Whitsundays on their own. Regardless of your preference, both offer a great visiting experience to the Whitsundays.

The itinerary which I’ve curated below can be perfectly suited for both the exploration ways. But, if you’re choosing the bareboat version, we have some tips for you!

This section explains what a bareboat is, how you need to book them, which ones to choose, and what rental equipment to purchase. All-in-all, if you have doubts about self-touring the Whitsunday Islands, this section will clear out the answers!

What is a Bareboat?

Let’s first understand what a bareboat really is. It’s nothing but a term used for a vessel that you rent without a crew. For example, when you usually take boat trips around an island, you have a staff accompanying your journey. Be it the sailor or catering team – they are with you on your trip. But, in the bareboat scenario, the vessel belongs to you privately. There won’t be any crew, any staff joining you on this trip. This type of vessel thus gives you the flexibility of sailing your own itinerary at your own pace.

Travel Tip: You do need some prior experience sailing a bareboat or a private yacht. If you don’t, then there are few options to ride out Power Catamarans. Do check with the tour operator before you make any reservations.

Monohulls Vs Catamarans

Now that you know what a bareboat is let’s consider the options to decide which one is more suitable. I do not have much expertise in this area to guide you on which one is the best; however, I’ll put a differential list between the two popular boats, i.e. Monohulls and Catamarans.

Monohulls are yachts with a single hull. Since it has only one hull, it makes it difficult to sail against the strong winds. However, given the right conditions at the Whitsundays, Monohulls offers the best sailing experience.

Catamarans, on the other side, have two hulls. Since the stance of the heel area is large, this type of boat slightly less succumbs to strong winds. This type of bareboat is perfect for families travelling with kids.

How to Rent a Bareboat in the Whitsunday Islands?

Bareboating in Whitsundays is a unique experience and offers you the freedom to create your own sailing path. As fruitful as the experience sounds, finding a good tour operator to book your trip isn’t easy.

I recommend Charter Yachts Australia for our Whitsundays itinerary to smoothen your efforts. I don’t have an affiliate relationship with them; rather, I’m suggesting this tour operator based on a few travellers’ experiences. The operator’s service and affordable rates make it simpler for you to book your perfect bareboat adventure.

Get your Rental Equipment Ready

This Whitsunday itinerary for 7 days will be taking you across several different protected bay areas. And, I’m pretty sure you want to try out water adventures during your trip. Thus, I recommend you book your rental pieces of equipment in advance. The first option is to book directly from the cruise operator. The second is to book individual guided activities. I advice you to book certain activities before your trip, as its much cheaper than making reervations last moment.

Detailed Whitsundays Itinerary 7 Days

Day 1: Airlie Beach

Airlie Beach in Queensland is a perfect touring base to explore the Whitsunday Islands. During the peak season, Airlie is completely flocked with tourists and can be one of the busiest periods to spend your vacation. However, given that you travel during the shoulder season – Airline Beach is an amazing destination to spend a couple of nights.

Airlie Beach is not only a major tourist attraction but an important site for day-trippers to explore nearby islands. It acts as a gateway to enter the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef. And while it offers an incredible experience for those wanting to explore nearby islands, Airline Beach itself is a place worth exploring.

For our Whitsunday itinerary, I only included a single-night stay at Airlie Beach because I feel one day is more than sufficient to explore what this coastal base has to offer. Furthermore, below are some of the suggestions which you could do on day one itself.

Learn to Sail

Sailing in Whitsundays is a definitive experience, and this is your time to get a perfect hands-on experience sailing a charter. You could start your day at Airlie Beach by getting to know the boat’s mechanics, sailor’s terminologies, and plenty of other things. This way, you get acquainted with all sailing-related tips before your trip starts.

As soon as you arrive at Airlie Beach, you can see plenty of yacht operators offering professional and practical courses. Depending on your preference, you could purchase the plan or simply get a hands-on tour for a few hours.

Relax in the Airlie Beach Lagoon

There’s nothing more peaceful than laying down on a beach, soaking in the tropical vibes of Airlie’s beauty. If relaxation is your key priority, then the Airline Beach Lagoon makes it possible. Located right in the centre of the beach, the lagoon has become a popular tourist focal point. With no entry fees, you could literally spend all day relaxing at the lagoon.

With a fusion of man-made and natural attractions, the Airlie Beach Lagoon is one of the most-visited spots in Queensland. It’s ideal for those who want to relax by the beach, either reading a book or sipping a glass of wine.

Day 2: Stonehaven

Hook Island is one of the popular beach islands of Whitsundays. It’s most commonly known for its anchorage spots.

The term ‘anchorage‘ basically means an area where you can safely dock your ship, yacht, or charter. These anchorage spots provide safe navigable waterways for your boats to explore nearby areas and places.

For the next three days, you’ll be exploring the reefs and islands of Hook Island. As mentioned earlier, this island is a safe place for boat anchorage – you’ll be having multiple options to dock your bareboat.

The first on the list is the famous Stonehaven. As described by many travelers, Stonehaven was their ‘favorite‘ anchorage spot to relax and soak in the charming atmosphere of the Whitsundays. Fringed by extensive reefs, Stonehaven makes a great spot to witness sunsets. Moreover, you can also opt to visit the Stonehaven waterfall, which is probably the only largest waterfall in Whitsunday Islands.

Day 3: Langford Reef & Butterfly Bay

Located near Hayman Island, Langford Reef is one of the magical places to snorkel in the Whitsunday Islands. Although small in size, the island has been well-appreciated for its beauty and exciting water-bound adventures. What I like the most, is that not many people venture off to Langford Reef. So, this could be your perfect spot if you prefer lesser-tourists.

The major highlight of visiting Langford reef is its long sand spit. Despite the heavy tides that smash the coast, the spit has been a favored spot for sunbathing, swimming, and beach-picnicking.

After your relaxation, head to the northern-most portion of Hook Island to explore Butterfly Bay. For a fact, I liked this bay even more than the Langford Reef. Many scuba divers and snorkellers often find Butterfly Bay as their sweet spot to cover the island’s fascinating ecosystem. And I personally found Butterfly Bay to be the best snorkeling site in the Whitsunday Islands.

Day 4: Macona Inlet

Situated to the south of Hook Island, Macona Inlet is also one of Whitsundays popular bay areas, offering great sheltered anchorage. Often so, places like Nara Inlet and Bufferfly Bay tend to be crowded with tourists. So, in such a scenario, Macona Inlet could be a great alternative to dock overnight.

I didn’t find Macona to be a great snorkeling site, however, it’s good if you love kayaking and paddle boarding. Just rent a kayak and wander off to explore the nearby bays of Hook Island.

Day 5: Whitsunday Island

It feels like a dream to explore Whitsunday Islands in Queensland. Out of all the isles, Whitsunday is arguably the most beautiful one.

Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday is one of the most tranquil beaches on earth. It isn’t only popular in Australia but also competes with the world’s other glistening beaches. Nestled amongst the corals of the Great Barrier Reef, Whitehaven is 7km (4.3mi) long, filled with the purest of white silica sands.

Since the beach is situated within a national park, Whitehaven stands out as the most pristine beach in Australia. The beach and its marine life are well-protected, despite the many day-trippers visiting the shore. To make your exploration at Whitehaven Beach more exciting, I suggest booking a seaplane or a scuba-dive activity to explore the wonders underneath the coast.

Day 6: Hamilton Island

If I can something paradise, then that would probably be Hamilton Island.

Fringed by bushlands, palm trees, and extensive coastline, Hamilton Island just might be the place for you to witness what ‘luxury’ means. The reason why I call this a luxurious island is because of the fancy resorts that call Hamilton has its home. If that’s what you prefer, then try booking an overnight stay at qualia – one that defines the ‘pure luxury’ of Hamilton Island.

Alternatively, you can explore the island’s in-house attractions, including Hamilton Island wildlife and Dent Island. I’d rather suggest a short trip to the Hamilton Island Wildlife first, to discover Australia’s most friendly native animals. From koalas to crocodiles and bird species, you can almost spot them in the great vicinity. Then, if time permits, take a trip to Dent Island. Try a game of golf here, or paddle a kayak down the island’s coral reefs to explore what Hamilton offers.

Day 7: South Molle Island

Surrounded by an oasis of palm trees and white sands, South Molle is a tiny little island located off the coast of Shutte Harbour. There isn’t much to do around, than soaking in the pleasures of your last day at Whitsunday. I would probably give a try to some activities, if you regret missing out on something. Just like the other islands, South Molle does offer great experiential tours for you to explore the best of Whitsunday Islands.

More or less, you could simply spend this day relaxing and cherishing the memorable trip you just had!

This marks the end of your Whitsunday itinerary 7 days.

Whitsunday Islands Day Trip & Excursions

Whitsundays is a paradisiacal place to explore island day trips, beach-walking, snorkeling, kayaking, swimming, and many other activities. If you are keen to discover what more you could do in our Whitsundays itinerary, then I highly recommend checking out these specific tours:

Love rafting? Explore Whitsundays on this epic ocean rafting tour.
Want to go aerial? Explore the tropical islands of Whitsunday on this 60-minute scenic flight.
Take a half-day trip to Whitehaven beach on this amazing 6-hour cruise.

Hope your enjoyed reading this guide as much as we enjoyed curating it. This 7-day itinerary to Whitsundays explores some of the area’s most unspoiled regions & attractions. As you sail past the islands, you’ll soon realize that there’s more to your adventure. Oh, and if 7 days in the Whitsundays isn’t enough, you can always extend it by spending a couple of nights more.

Are you planning on taking a road trip in Australia? Wondering what are the best road trip options, sight-seeing attractions, drivable routes, and things to see and do? Then read this guide as we handpick one of the unique, most-underrated outback adventures of Australia – Melbourne to Coober Pedy Road Trip.

Often I’ve seen that not many people like the outback for their road trips. On most occasions, visitors who travel to Australia for the first-time venture into the coastal city life to explore beaches and vineyards. However, there’s so much more to the Australian outback region, and it’s simply the best and much more peaceful than the suburbs.

I agree. For road trips – you may often prefer a Melbourne to Sydney route or Melbourne to Adelaide (via the Great Ocean Road). And that’s understandable! Because these are the most scenic routes in Australia. When it comes to the outback, you won’t find much glamour as these major cities hold, and they are less populated and less energetic. But, the lively sense of offering a memorable Aussie vacation always remains the same.

If you ask me, what I’d prefer? I’d go for Australian suburbs. But I’d never ever say a NO to the Australian outback road trip. Because this journey is wild, it’s rugged, it’s beyond the coastal city life of Australia. And that is exactly what we’ll mention in this road trip guide.

In this article, we’ve rounded up a list of the best places to stop and admire between Melbourne and Coober Pedy. Along with the list, we’ve added a map, curated a sample itinerary, and mentioned a few BONUS places to see along the road trip. We also share some essential tips, lesser-known suggestions, and recommendations for your other Australian outback journeys.

About the Outback Australia Road Trip

Before we get into the details of our journey, let’s first look at – why you need to take this outback travel?

Outback Australia is a dream for many, especially for travelers like us, who seek adventure. From backpackers to campers, the place is a delight to everyone who enjoys off-beat ventures. Plus, it doesn’t matter what’s your travel style. Whether you’re traversing across the Simpson Desert, hiking through the glorious trails of Flinders Rangers, or camping under the star-studded sky, there’s a list of endless things to see and do in the outback of Australia.

Hence it’s worthwhile taking a trip to see the charming quirks of wild west Australia.

Why should you take the Melbourne to Coober Pedy Road Trip?

The answer is pretty straightforward: Coober Pedy is one of the most unusual, underrated spots in outback Australia. It’s one of those places in the country that may seem less appealing at first, but it might take some time to really appreciate its beauty. More importantly, the places you visit on your way to Coober Pedy are simply remarkable.

The wildness of the Little Desert National Park, the rolling hills of the Clare Valley, and the striking beauty of Adelaide & Glendambo all add their contribution to making this unique road trip a “must-do” thing in Australia.

Planning Tips for Melbourne to Coober Pedy Road Trip

Now that you know what outback Australia offers let’s get into the finer details of our Melbourne to Coober Pedy road trip. In this section, we’ve provided a detailed map, suggested driving routes, listed down places to see, and much more.

Driving Times for Melbourne to Coober Pedy

The journey to reach Coober Pedy from Melbourne is extremely long. If you drive non-stop, the whole trip takes 16hr 59mins which is approximately 1559kms (or 968 miles). However, a non-stop journey isn’t realistic, and we wouldn’t recommend this at any cost. To make the most out of your journey, span this road trip over the course of 4-5 days. This is ideally the best duration to admire the scenic spots falling between Melbourne and Coober Pedy.

Here’s a quick glance at suggested & alternative routes & their times:

Via the National Highway A87: 16hr 59mins (1559kms) – the recommended route.
Via the National Highway A8 and A87: 17hr 20mins (1561kms) – not the best route, given the traffic near Adelaide.

Renting a Car in Australia

Of course, you’ll need a car. If you have your own vehicle, make sure the condition is safe for the entire journey. I mean, you do not want to take a vehicle that can break down mid-way. For tourists, renting a car is your best bet. I recommend choosing Rentalcars.com for its affordability and service. You can choose a variety of options from their car list, to get a suitable vehicle for yourself.

Alternatively, you can check Skyscanner for their rental car options. They, too, have a great variety of options to choose from. With affordable rates, you can book the one you desire.

The Best Melbourne to Coober Pedy Road Trip Stops

Finally, let’s take a look at the best road trip stops between Melbourne and Coober Pedy (listed in the order if you drive from Melbourne)

Ballarat

The first stop on your Melbourne to Coober Pedy road trip is Ballarat – one of Victoria’s award-winning tourist attractions. When I first traveled to this city, I absolutely loved its Victorian architectural heritage. The town is immensely proud of its deep roots, dating back to the gold rush days of the 19th century. With so much history around, it’s unstoppable for tourists like us to learn & understand its contribution.

I could state plenty of reasons you need to stop and spend some time at Ballarat. Firstly, it doesn’t matter if you’re a history buff or not; there are other things that might interest you. If you love modern cuisine, you’re right in the presence of an amazing culinary scene. Visitors stop by at Ballarat and enjoy delicious local cuisine at Catfish for Thai food, Fu Man Lou Dumpling Bar for great dumplings, and The Forge for fresh classic pizzas.

Suppose you love sampling wine; head to the Pyrenees Wine Region to relish Victoria’s most evergreen wines. It’s 40-minutes away from the central city, so you’ll have to do some driving around.

That’s not all! If you’re seeking some family-friendly activities at Ballarat, the Ballarat Wildlife Park will offer the fun required. Here, you get the chance to be up close with native wildlife like koalas, kangaroos, and reptiles. Furthermore, the Sovereign Hill in the town is a hard miss. Being Australia’s number one outdoor museum, the place is a must-visit for all travelers exploring the town.

Horsham

Horsham, one of my favorite cities in the heart of Wimmera, is a gateway to some of Australia’s most natural sights. It acts as a perfect base for tourists to come and explore the region’s astonishing beauty. The town has its own reputation for building a lively sense of atmosphere for the locals to contribute their share in the arts communities and regional development.

The reason I recommend Horsham as one of the road trip stops is because of its sight-seeing variety. If you spend some time, you’d really know its beauty. Popular attractions like the Horsham Botanic Gardens, Horsham Police Paddock, and Horsham Regional Art Gallery make up a good share to attract tourists. However, the exploration doesn’t end here. With the famous Silo Art Trail and the Grampians National Park, located 30-36 minutes away from the city – you could do much more than just tour around!

Given that you drive a little more, you could take a day trip to Murtoa Stick Shed and Dimboola’s Pink Lake from Horsham.

All these attractions and nearby experiences make Horsham one of the best places to visit in Victoria.

Little Desert National Park

My third recommended stop is the Little Desert National Park, located between the Wimmera River and the South Australian border. Famous for hikes, walks, and overnight camping – the national park has been a favorite weekend getaway destination for locals and tourists alike. I had seen people taking a trip from Melbourne to the Little Desert National Park only to camp. I asked a few of my friends before my visit, and they said, “it’s a surreal experience to camp & hike at Little Desert.”

On my visit, I didn’t find this national park crammed with scenic photo stops; however, it does a great job of featuring excellent hiking trails. So, if you’re an adrenaline junkie, who loves to take on challenges, then the Little Desert National Park is the place for you.

Personally, I am not much of a hike-lover, but I did admire the Stringybark Loop – which is a 1km circuit across the Nhill-Harrow Road. This trail is suitable for families and kids who simply want to cherish the beauty of this national park. Moreover, the Stringybark Loop introduces you to a variety of the park’s vegetational features – including desert stringybark, yellow gums, and silver banksia. Besides, Keith Hateley Nature Walk and Pomponderoo Hill Nature Walk also take you around the park’s recreational spots.

What I like the most about this national park is its camping experience. I stayed at Ankle Bend campsite, which was indeed one of the best experiences of my road trip. There are several options, too – such as Kiata campgrounds, Yellow Gum Walkers Camp, and Horseshoe Bend.

Please note: Campers wishing to spend overnight at Ankle Bend and Horseshoe Bend will apply camping fees. You will need to arrange your accommodation by visiting the Parks Victoria website.

Bordertown

As the name suggests, Bordertown literally lies in the middle of the two Australian states – Victoria and South Australia. Upon your arrival in the Limestone Coast region, Bordertown is the first destination you’ll hit. Compared to other places listed in this guide, there isn’t much to do around this town. However, it’s worthwhile to stop and check out its two most popular attractions – Walkway Gallery & Bob Hawke Museum and Bordertown Wildlife Park. Of course, there are plenty more – but I think you should prioritize these two on your visit.

I am not much of an art lover. However, I do appreciate good art being represented on some topics. And I enjoyed visiting the Walkway Gallery because of its varied touring exhibitions and events. I was lucky enough to see one local artist creating a live masterpiece on the spot. Furthermore, the section of Bob Hawke Gallery is also worth your exploration.

The other point of attraction, the Bordertown Wildlife Park, is a must-visit sight to spot white kangaroos. It’s the only colony in Australia to house these species of kangaroos in their natural habitat.

Adelaide

I’m pretty sure that Adelaide requires no such introduction! Along with being one of Australia’s most charming cities, Adelaide is a heart-warming cultural town filled with thriving restaurants, exquisite bar scenes, vineyards, beaches, immersive festivals and events, and much more. Honestly, I could brag a ton of reasons why you need to visit Adelaide right now. It’s just a lovely town, and you could do many things in just a short venture.

While you’re here, do not forget to visit the stunning Adelaide Botanical Gardens. Spread over an area of 50hectares, this lush green space is a paradisical home to Australian native plants. It houses different species, including the Madagascan palms and Amazonian water lilies. The best part? Adelaide Botanical Gardens is absolutely free to visit.

When you’re short on time, I ideally suggest visitors explore Adelaide Central Markets. Being the largest market of all in the Southern Hemisphere, Adelaide Central Markets features over 70 vendors selling different types of artisan food and local produce. Plus, you could grab lunch or sip wine at any one of the multicultural cuisine restaurants located here. Food lovers can book a gastronomical tour to discover Adelaide’s culinary tales.

Apart from the botanical gardens and the central markets, there’s a lot more to Adelaide. Enjoy a game at Adelaide Oval, discover self-guided walking tours, and explore hiking trails at Cleland Conservation Park. Furthermore, if you’re staying overnight in Adelaide – I recommend taking day trips to the Fleurieu Peninsula, Adelaide Hills, or Clare Valley. All-in-all, the city of Adelaide is a bustling city housing glorious Australian attractions.

Clare Valley

Located two hours north of Adelaide, Clare Valley is one of South Australia’s most awarded wineries. The wine region has been enriched with an evergreen history, incredible wine cellars, luxury accommodation, and award-winning restaurants. From Adelaide, it’s a perfect weekend day trip to Clare Valley.

When you explore Clare Valley, you’ll soon realize there’s much more to the region than just being a “valley of the vineyards.” Local families run businesses here, farmers put out their weekly markets, walking trails lead you to the valley’s most intriguing places, and familiar regional stories surround the atmosphere. So whether you’re looking to sample SA’s most classic wines or simply explore the countryside with family – Clare Valley offers the best family-friendly experience.

Other Popular Things to Do at Clare Valley (which you shouldn’t miss):

  • Wander through the Riesling Trail.
  • Explore the wineries of Sevenhill Cellars and Pikes Wines.
  • Book a stay in a luxury homestead.
  • Discover week-long festivals, markets, and local fare.

Port Augusta

Although Port Augusta doesn’t offer much when it comes to sight-seeing, it still acts like a perfect base to explore other Australian landmarks. Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park is only a 2hr drive away from the central town of Port Augusta. So, eventually if you plan to stay overnight to explore the Flinders Ranges and Outback – the town will be your best place to relax.

Furthermore, there are nearby attractions (optional) to visit. These includes exploring the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden, Wadlata Outback Centre, and Dutchman’s Stern Conservation Park. Oh! there’s a lovely coastal town of Fitzgerald Bay located to the south of Port Augustus. Its famous for fishing and boat sailing.

Lake Hart

Located in the Woomera region, Lake Hart is one of the beautiful and accessible lakes of South Australia. There’s not an awful lot of stuff to do around the lake, but it still makes a great admirable spot between Port Augusta and Glendambo. Moreover, what I would recommend is to leave early from your hotel. You do not want to miss the sunrise over Lake Hart; its beauty is much appreciated from 6 am to 8 am.

Glendambo

Glendambo is one of the most important stops along the Stuart Highway, which offers visitors a range of services travelling to Coober Pedy. It’s the only roadhouse where you can rest and facilitate all your essential needs. Since Coober Pedy is 254km north of Glendambo, you could opt to stay overnight at the nearby caravan park.

Where to Stay

Honestly, it’s hard for me to pick the best places to stay between Melbourne and Coober Pedy route. Because the choice of accommodation, budget, and preference so much depends on your overall itinerary and how much time you spend at each location.

For example, you could simply stay 4-5 days in Adelaide and make a trip.

Secondly, all the places listed above and in the itinerary are well equipped with a range of accommodation options. Be it luxury, mid-range, or budgeted-stay – you’ll find the right choice of accommodation for your road trip. I personally used Skyscanner and Tripadvisor for my road trip planner, and it helped me a lot to find specific campsites & budget hotel stays.

And I’ll suggest the same idea to you. Look out for options that are well within your budget so that you can spend more on booking local activities & experiences.

Travel Tip: I always cut down my expenses on booking not-so-luxurious stays. I believe in treating yourself a fancy holiday, but on vacations like road trips, I say it’s best to stay at a standard, budgeted hotel to save my tour cost. I save money to book excursions, day trips, and any other local experience.

Best Australian Outback Tours

These are some of the popular guided tours of the Australian Outback. To make your Melbourne to Coober Pedy itinerary more unique, add some of the local tour experiences and niche activities.

So, this was our guide + itinerary for you to plan a perfect Melbourne to Coober Pedy road trip. Hope you enjoyed reading this guide, as much as I enjoyed curating it. Likewise, the journey doesn’t stop at Coober Pedy. You can extend your trip by elevating your exploration to some of the Northern & Western portions of Australia. These include visiting Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre National Park, Flinders Ranges, Simpson Desert Conservation Park, Alice Springs, and Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park.

Rolling hills, undulating valleys, coastal towns, and scenic wine regions make Fleurieu Peninsula one of the best destinations in South Australia. For a long time, the area has been known to promote a significant amount of hiking trails & walking paths. Its popularity has grown since the addition of newer hiking trails in the region. Some paths wind through the McLaren Vale wine region, whilst some venture through the coastal seaside towns and suburbs of the Fleurieu. Ultimately, all trails lead you to the best scenic spots of the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Whether you’re hiking, walking, trekking, or bush-walking – the Fleurieu Peninsula offers the best hiking trails to explore in South Australia. Some of the hikes in Fleurieu are undeniably beautiful – leading us to compile a list of the must-visit ones.

In this guide, we’ve rounded up a short list of all the best Fleurieu Peninsula hikes you should visit now!

Fleurieu Peninsula’s Best Hiking & Walking Trails

Out of all the hiking you do in Fleurieu, these two remain the top-rated trails in South Australia. Both Onkaparinga River National Park and Deep Creek Conservation Park boast dramatic scenery, lush wildlife, dense forest area, and rich vegetation. With walking trails leading you to some of Fleurieu’s best views, putting them inside your bucket-list adventures is worth mentioning.

Onkaparinga River National Park

The beauty of experiencing the hikes at Onkaparinga River National Park is its diversity. With over 17 hiking trails, the park covers all types of surfaces for you to walk upon. From easy flat walks to rugged cliffs, there’s everything to suit your hiking style. The most popular trail of Onkaparinga is Punchbowl Lookout Trail. This 2km stretch is best suited for families who merely want to wander through the deep forests of the national park.

To try something challenging, we suggest taking the Gorge Hike. As the name suggests, the trail ventures through deep gorges and densely forested park areas. For any beginner-level hiker, the stretch can take 4 hrs to complete.

We also recommend taking a trip to the Onkaparinga River Recreation Park. You’ll find plenty of combination trials with accessible boardwalk and gravel paths. Try The Wetland loop, which is also suitable for prams and wheelchairs.

Deep Creek Conservation Park

One of the most-visited parks of South Australia, the Deep Creek National Park is truly a wild, rugged beauty of the Fleurieu Peninsula region. The region is known to feature some of the most striking scenes, including rough terrain, cliffs, secluded viewpoints, and classic walking trails. You’ll also be greeted with stunning white sand beaches and abundant wildlife.

Deep Creek National Park houses 15 walking trails of different difficulty levels. All these trails lead you to the best spots in the conservation park, including Deep Creek Valley and Backstairs Passage. The slightly-more difficult paths lead you to even more scenic locations, granting you the best viewing experience.

For families, we recommend a friendly trail to hike upon, i.e. The Stringybark Loop. This flat, straight surface is best suited for families travelling with kids, and it takes less than 30-minutes to complete the entire stretch. To make it more memorable, camp at the Stringybark campsite and marvel at the scenic lookout areas from your spot.

To level up your hiking, take the Deep Creek Waterfall Hike. Starting from the Tent Rock Road, this trail is often walked by moderate hikers with reasonable fitness levels. Nevertheless, if you feel you’re up for the challenge, it will only reward you more. The total distance of the Deep Creek Waterfall Hike is 3.5km; on average, it takes 2 hrs to complete.

The Blowhole Beach Hike will sweat you down to the core for those who love adrenaline fun. The descent portion is relatively flat, with no such challenge; however, the uphill burns you. But, the beauty of the trail attracts the tourists the most. You’ll need good fitness levels to pass this trial, so ensure you’re equipped with energy bars & healthy snacks. On average, the trail takes 2.5 hrs to complete.

Popular Walking Trails of the Fleurieu Peninsula

Heysen Trail

Heysen Trail is one of South Australia’s iconic hiking trails. Stretching from the Flinders Ranges to the Fleurieu Peninsula, the trail covers a distance of a total of 1200km. The entire route of the Heysen Trail is broken down into several sections with moderate difficulty levels. However, the portion falling on the Fleurieu Peninsula region (75.5km of length) is the one you shouldn’t miss!

The smaller sections, such as the Waitpinga Cliffs to Kings Beach, are even a more spectacular version of the Heysen Trail. This particular portion of the trail ventures through the coastal scrub, leading you to the best ocean views of the Fleurieu. Also, watch out for dolphins and seals – as they tend to hop out occasionally near the beach.

Southern Ocean Walk

To get the most out of your Fleurieu Peninsula hikes, join a guided walking tour with one of SA’s top tour operatorsSouthern Ocean Walk. Independent hikes are fun, but it’s even better to enter an expert along your tour. The amount of knowledge about conservation, wildlife, and native heritage you get is impressive.

While the benefit of joining a guided tour is always a peak, don’t forget to delve deeper into the exploration of Fleurieu’s amazing coastal landscapes. The trail leads you through dense forest and bushes, ultimately landing you near the beach area.

The Southern Ocean Walk guided tours include to & fro transfers, meals, and accommodation in Deep Creek National Park. For more info, visit the site.

Willunga Basin Trail

Willunga Basin Trail is one of the Fleurieu Peninsula’s beautiful hiking trails. Covering a distance of 130km, the trail journeys between a diverse landscape of dense forest, bushland, parks, vineyards, and beaches. The terrain is relatively easy to hike compared to other Fleurieu Peninsula hikes. However, it still requires moderate fitness levels to complete some portion, which can either be completed over 5 days or 11 days.

Furthermore, the Willunga Basin Trail connects Heysen and Coast to Vines trail. It also winds through the local settlements of Fleurieu, including Port Willunga, Maslin Beach, McLaren Vale, Kangarilla, and Moana.

The Kidman Trail

The Kidman Trail is a family-friendly stretch from Willunga to the rolling hills of the Barossa Valley. The path is popular for hiking, biking, and horse-riding. Thus, families visiting the Fleurieu Peninsula can enjoy spectacular views along the Kidman Trail.

The Stuart River Linear Park Trail

The Stuart River Linear Park Trail is one of the new additions to the Fleurieu Peninsula hikes. Go deep into the dramatic fjords, and find extraordinary places to discover in our 3 Day Itinerary Alaska.

You may think a 3 day itinerary to Alaska is impossible, or instead, we’re nuts even to suggest a schedule so short. But, let us prove you wrong – as we’re about to present a sample 3 days in Alaska tour for your next vacation.

Alaska is a natural gem. It’s a state filled with glorious attractions, sightseeing tours, and plenty of excursions. Its rugged mountains, snowy landscapes, Glacier blue waters, and dense rainforests make it worthwhile to plan your next trip to the U.S.

But is 3 days in Alaska worth it?

Not many would like to go to a place where they could only spend a short duration enjoying their vacation. Most of us (including me) love traveling – where we could spend a week or so. We have longer Alaska itineraries covering the best sightseeing trips, cruises, and tours. Moreover, you could also plan an Alaskan road trip with the help of this schedule.

When suggesting a 3-day Alaska trip, we wouldn’t recommend going for it if you were to explore only Alaska. This is mainly for tourists who have already booked their U.S. or Canada trips. Travelers who love venturing to other parts of the North American segments often fulfill their bucket-list adventures by extending their vacation. Tourists who often end their trip to Seattle, Vancouver, or British Columbia usually book/extend their itinerary to Alaska for a couple of days.

In such scenarios, a 3 day itinerary in Alaska makes sense!

Likewise, there are multi-options for you to choose how to spend your 3 days in Alaska. You could either explore Girdwood & Spencer Glacier or take a more profound exploration tour to cities like Seward, Anchorage, Kenai, and Fairbanks.

No matter how you spend your days in Alaska, the opportunities presented by its vibrant tourism are endless.

Overview of the 3 Day Itinerary Alaska

During these 3 days in Alaska, the trip is curated explicitly for travelers looking to extend their North American tour. While the duration doesn’t seem feasible to explore all of Alaska in 3 days, it still gives you ample opportunities to discover the state’s highlights and landmarks.

In this Alaska itinerary, you’ll be spending 3 days in Anchorage – including a day trip to Seward – to experience the magical Kenai Fjords National Park. Moreover, expect to tour Anchorage’s unique locations, museums, restaurants, and waterfront areas. Additionally, you can add pre-or post-cruise tours in Anchorage and club it with other day trips.

Essential Planning Tips for 3 Day Itinerary Alaska

Best Time to Visit Alaska

The best time to visit Alaska is between May and September (summer). While this isn’t the peak period, you’ll still find many tourists hoping to tour the state. Try to avoid June and July, as they tend to pull in many crowds in Alaska. Furthermore, the hotel rates, airfares, attraction fees, and travel expenses all hike up to cater to the peak season of Alaska.

While we recommend traveling between May and September, we would also recommend experiencing the different seasons of Alaska (winter, spring, fall, and summer). Each season offers a distinct uniqueness & charm in exploring Alaska, with varying temperatures and daylight hours.

Health & Safety Guidelines

It’s essential to follow COVID-19 guidelines (if any) while traveling within Alaska. At the current time of writing, the state is open for tourists to explore. However, this is uncertain, and the updates can change depending on the time you travel. Its best recommended staying updated with their policies here.

Lonely Planet for Alaska

Lonely Planet is one of the most influential travel books of all time. Being a leading pioneer in the industry, the company has curated some great destination guide books, travel tips, maps, and useful resources. I personally use them during my own travels and its the best thing I carry out of all essentials.

How Much Does a 3 Day Alaska Itinerary Cost

On average, a 3 day Alaska Itinerary costs around $1800-$2100. This is an indicative price considering mid-range hotels, day-to-day travel expenses, and other miscellaneous. The tour cost will also depend on the season you travel to (peak vs. shoulder). Plus, any other cruise tours, hiking excursions, and off-beaten ventures will add to your cost.

Moreover, the entire trip cost will come down to selecting your activity choices and accommodation. Through our partnership programs with various travel companies, we make it easy for you to book preferred activities & entry-ticket fees at much cheaper costs.

Detailed 7 Day Scotland Road Trip

Day 1: Edinburgh

Arrive at Edinburgh.

Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, is the second-most visited destination in the UK.

The city is filled with medieval marvels, historic castles, museums, gardens, pubs, cafes, restaurants, and much more. It’s a place that charms you uniquely with its vibrant culture and atmosphere.

Visiting Edinburgh feels refreshing, and its narrow cobbled alleys make the city look quite romantic to stroll around. On the contrary, the city’s underbelly reminisces dark events, myths, and legends. Thus, giving a perfect blend of all the craziness, you can expect.

For our 7 day Scotland itinerary, we’ll only be staying in Edinburgh for a day. However, you can customize this itinerary to extend a couple of nights to explore the city. Moreover, the below suggested activities will help you have a brief introductory tour of Edinburgh.

Edinbrugh certainly sounds like a charming city, but its underground vaults has a different story altogether. While the romantic city flares its charm, the vaults beneath the city spook you with mysterious witchcraft tales, murders and scary stories.

This guided tour is all about discovering the Old Town’s dark history. The vaults underneath the town dates back to the early 18th century, where true mysterious incidents occurred. Many television series and documentaries have featured these vaults on their show, calling it the scariest part to live in. Moreover, as you venture through these walls, learn about the Burke and Hare murders, witchcraft magic and other paranormal stories hidden inside the city of Edinburgh.

Edinburgh Castle Guided Tour

A trip to Edinburgh is incomplete without exploring its iconic fortification. Edinburgh Castle is the single biggest draw to attract visitors to get influenced by its amazing architecture, history, and grandeur exploration.

With the help of this skip-the-line guided tour, you can take the advantage of visiting the Castle Complex and its many attractions. Edinburgh to Inverness Road Trip Stops

Stirling

Stirling is one of those unmissable places you can’t afford to explore in Scotland. This highland town houses one of the largest and most important castles – the Stirling Castle. Due to its imposing architecture, the site has been a popular stop between Edinburgh and Inverness route.

If you’re a history buff, you might be interested in a guided tour of Stirling Castle. It’s a great way to explore the past events and fascinating stories as you wander through the walls of this oldest castle. There’s also a fun family trail near the court to learn more about the historical timeline of Stirling.

St Andrews

St Andrews is a small town located 50 miles north of Edinburgh, and it makes a perfect base for travellers who often come visit to relax and unwind. Although small, it packs a lot of fascinating history to learn and discover.

The first notable attraction to explore is the University of St Andrews. It’s one of the UK’s premier institutes, where many prominent Brits, including Prince William, have studied. Since the university is operational and regular lectures happen – guided tours are limited. Walking experiences are offered every Tuesday and Friday in the morning, led by student ambassadors of the university.

There are a couple of museums to explore if you wish to experience the heritage of St Andrew’s University. Moreover, in the evenings – popular ghost tours are conducted.

Perth

Don’t confuse the name with the Australian city, as Perth of Scotland makes an interesting stop between Edinburgh and Inverness drive.

Perth isn’t loaded with attractions compared to other popular stops, but it still happens to be a place for tourists to come by. While you’re here, visit the iconic Scone Palace – famously known as the site to crown 42 Scottish kings. Later, stroll around the park to admire the town’s alluring beauty.

There are plenty of other stops to check out between Edinburgh and Inverness. While you can’t cover the rest in our 7 day Scotland itinerary, you can alternatively plan a separate road trip covering these two destinations.

Here, you can opt to cruise around this stunning lake to view the Urquhart Castle and admire the glamourous beauty of the Scottish Highlands. Legends say ‘a dark monstrous creature lures beneath the expanse of Loch Ness‘. This mysterious image makes it attractive for travelers to venture through the waters of Loch Ness and satisfy their curiosity.

Day 4: Inverness – Skye

Today, we take the adventure of witnessing one of the most scenic routes of Scotland.

Inverness to Skye is undoubtedly the most remarkable driving route in Scotland, and it takes you to stunning locations such as Eilean Donan Castle, Portree, Kilt Rock, and the Old Man of Storr. It’s also worth mentioning that plenty of 1-Day Inverness to Isle of Skye tours regularly depart, and you can check them here.

Inverness to Isle of Skye Road Trip Stops

The Five Sisters of Kintail and Glen Shiel

The first viewpoint is one of Highlands’ dramatic landscapes – the Five Sisters of Kintail and Glen Shiel. It’s a group of mountains nestled in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland, and this was precisely the place where the Battle of Glen Shiel occurred in 1719. Despite its brutal history, the area is gorgeous to stop by and admire.

Eilean Donan Castle

Eilean Donan, a 13th-century Castle, is one of Scotland’s most photographed castles. Located off an island, it majestically sits between three Lochs – Dutch, Alsh, and Long. Many film directors have used the castle feature in movies. You can even take a guided tour of the castle to wander off its surroundings. Explore this page to find out more.

Skye Bridge

Although not an attraction, the Skye Bridge is still a prominent place for tourists to appreciate glistening views. Most likely, you’ll be driving the bridge to cross over to the Isle of Skye, and you can stop by and spend some time spectating the mighty Cuillin Mountains.

After a brief journey, you’ll finally reach the Isle of Skye. The rest of the evening is free for you to explore the surroundings.

Day 5: Skye

The Isle of Skye is one of Scotland’s most happening destinations. It’s also the highlight of our 7 day Scotland itinerary, where you get to witness jaw-dropping scenery, incredible hikes, quaint towns, seafood restaurants, and many more.

It’s pretty standard for a first-time traveler to get overwhelmed by the opportunities presented. But we got you covered, as we recommend the top-rated activities to do on the Isle of Skye below –

Isle of Skye | Scotland Itinerary 7 Days
Isle of Skye in Scotland

The Old Man Storr

The Old Man Storr is considered the “symbol of Skye,” and it’s one of the famous points of interest; it’s worth starting your trip from here. This vertical rock (50-meter) was created by an ancient landslide and largely dominates the northeast Skye.

Because of its sheer size, the Storr can almost be seen from anywhere. You can even hike up the area to soak in expansive views of the Isle of Skye. The total time can vary depending on your fitness, but consider the average completion of close to 1hr 15minutes. It can be a little time-consuming to complete the hike, but it is worth it to admire panoramic views.

Old Man of Storr Hike

Travel Tip: Try visiting the Old Man of Storr early in the morning, and it’s one of the best photogenic spots, especially during sunrise.

Dunvegan Castle

The Isle of Skye is all about rugged landscapes and expanding coastline. But that doesn’t leave the typical Scottish castles behind. After all, it’s Scotland!

Dunvegan Castle is nestled off on a clifftop at Loch Dunvegan. Its gardens are a particular highlight, where you can view a collection of paintings and artifacts of the MacLeod clan. Moreover, you can also take a boat ride from Dunvegan Castle to spot seals who come ashore.

Fairy Pools

As the name suggests, the Fairy Pools is one of Scotland’s most magical places to witness waterfalls. The scenes here almost look like a painting brought to life.

Fairy Pools on the Isle of Skye
Fairy Pools | Scotland Itinerary

Located at Glenbrittle, the Fairy Pools are a series of waterfalls backed by the famous Cuillin mountains. You’ll first need to park your car at Fairy Pools car park to get here. Once done, visitors can walk the 2.4km stretch across the gravel path to reach the first waterfall in the area. This is the biggest of all and the most beautiful of the Fairy Pools region. Continue down the same path to explore other tiny waterfalls and small pools.

The tropical setting of the Fairy Pools, along with the Cuillin mountains, makes this place a must-visit location on the Isle of Skye.

Portree

Portree is more of a vibrant city compared to other places within the Isle of Skye, and it is where you can indulge in all of the seafood Scotland typically offers. Moreover, Portree makes a great place to book your accommodation because of its central location. Many of its famous cafes, pubs, and restaurants are located nearby – thus making it accessible.

You can also take short boat rides to explore the waterfront areas near Portree.

Read this fantastic guide to find more info on the Isle of Skye attractions + experiences.

Day 6: Skye – Oban

Today we depart for Oban.

There are two ways to reach Oban from the Isle of Skye – one being the Mallaig ferry and the other being the inland route via the Skye Bridge. We recommend following the course via Glenfinnan, where many people come to marvel at the railway viaduct. It’s also been featured in “Harry Potter” films and other series.

The total journey from Skye to Oban is approx 3hr 52mins (without any stops/traffic). Hence, it’s better to leave early in the morning to complete the journey.

Overnight at Oban.

Day 7: Oban – Glasgow

Oban serves as an excellent touring base for taking day trips like Inverness. The Western Highlands surrounding Oban makes a great exploration site for travelers to tour & explore some of its wonders.

Below are some of the suggested day trips you can take from Oban. Moreover, you can also relax and tour the town at your own pace.

Things to do in Oban –

Jacobite Steam Train

Jacobite Steam Train is one of the great highlights of Scotland. Deemed the world’s most extraordinary railway journey, the steam train travels 84-miles of roundtrip, taking you past some of the country’s extreme landscapes.

Steam Train in Oban
Steam Train a.k.a Hogwarts Express

If you opt to ride on this steam train, you’ll pass through Scotland’s glorious villages – Arisaig, Morar, Lochailort, and Mallaig. On a clear sunny day, you’ll also spot the “Small Isles” of Rum and the southern end of Skye. Alternatively, you can also stop at Fort William to relax and soak in Oban’s atmosphere.

You’ll easily recognize the Jacobite Steam Train if you’re a massive Harry Potter fan. The train was referred to as the “Hogwarts Express” in the movie.

To book tickets for Jacobite Steam Train, visit this page.

Excursion to Mull, Iona & Staffa

You can even opt for a full-day excursion to Scotland’s three unique islands – Mull, Iona, and Staffa. The stunning scenery and the geological wonders make this one of the “must-visit” guided tours of Scotland. To take the time, you’ll need to depart from Oban Ferry Terminal – from where a ferry will take you across these islands.

This marks the end of your 7 day Scotland road trip. To depart back home, you can either drive to Glasgow or Edinburgh (depending on your preference).

Planning Tips for Scotland Itinerary 7 Days

Now that you’ve gone through our itinerary, it’s time to understand a few essential planning tips required for our 7 days in Scotland.

How to Plan an Ideal Scotland Road Trip

The foremost thing to do for any Scotland road trip is book a rental car.

Since our itinerary is based on a self-drive journey across Scotland, you’d want to make sure to book a nice ride for the entire duration. Doing so will give you the freedom and the flexibility to tour the whole country at your own pace. It’s much better than an organized tour, where you’d have to follow a specific regime.

But before you book a rental car, ensure you go through our travel tips below –

  1. Go for a smaller car. The majority of the roads in Scotland are single lanes (with passing places). So, eventually, it makes sense to book a smaller yet comfortable vehicle for your road trip.
  2. Have an International Driving Permit. You’d want to have an International Driving License for any road trips. A standard driver’s license will also work in some cases, provided it has a license number, photograph, date, and Latin letters. You can read more about the license regulation here.
  3. The official legal age to drive in Scotland is 17. However, most rental companies offer permits up to age 21 or 25.
  4. Make sure you have travel insurance for the entire duration of your trip.
  5. Try to book your rental car as early as possible. Rates can shoot up during the peak season in Scotland (June to August).

For a more detailed info on driving tips in Scotland, visit this page.

Driving Tips for Scotland Road Trip

A self-drive tour of Scotland may seem utterly gorgeous and flexible to you on paper. But, to have the best experience, you need to be careful about Scotland’s driving rules & conditions.

Driving in Scotland could get intimidating for most of us, as we are not adequately used to driving on the left. But, it’s not a big deal, especially when you’re just touring the country on a flexible routine.

Check out these few tips to help you have a smooth self-driving tour of Scotland –

  1. Drive on the left. Yes, it might take a while to get used to this habit for 7 days. But, if you’re a well-experienced driver – you should be fine in a day or so.
  2. Don’t drink & drive. Duh! We shouldn’t remind you of this, but be careful not to commit such a mistake. It is best to be responsible for our safety and protection.
  3. Get a Transport Scotland leaflet. This is a handy document provided by Transport Scotland to ensure you’re well-versed with traffic rules, regulations, and Scottish sign languages. Get a copy for yourself as soon as you arrive in Scotland.
  4. Drive slow. The best way to appreciate a self-drive tour in Scotland is to drive slower than the actual speed limits. Remember, you’re in Scotland to enjoy its experiences. Going slow will make you appreciate the landscape scenery passing by.
  5. Time your schedule. When we curated our 7 day Scotland itinerary, we put thoughtful research on the actual road distances and duration. You need to manage your schedule well to explore other places. Avoid getting stuck in one place for too long, and follow the daily route plan accordingly.

Best Time to Visit Scotland

Being a year-round destination, Scotland attracts the majority of the crowd throughout its seasons. Especially during the summers (June to August), the country is at its peak – driving tourists worldwide. But, at the same time, it’s also one of the best seasons (barring crowds) to enjoy bright sunny weather, daylight hours, and plenty of activities and festivals.

What most people do, is visit Scotland during its shoulder seasons (before & after summer). It doesn’t guarantee fewer tourists, but it still provides an enjoyable experience with agreeable weather.

The best time to visit Scotland is from late March to early May. Temperatures may usually range between 6°C to 15°C, making it more remarkable to visit most Scottish attractions.

Here’s a small fact file to help you plan a perfect Scotland trip –

  1. Just like in other European countries, the weather in Scotland is unpredictable. You could experience blazing sunlight, stormy weather, and foggy conditions in a single day. So, ensure you pack all the essentials for your Scotland road trip.
  2. July and August tend to be the hottest & busiest months in Scotland. Try to avoid them.
  3. Mostly from April to October, you could spot midges (small flying insects) in some parts of the country. You won’t find them in areas like Inverness and Loch Ness. Read more on midges and how to avoid them here.

What to Pack for Scotland Itinerary 7 Days

Considering the unpredictable weather of Scotland, you’ll need to pack your bag smartly for your 7-day trip. We’ve provided a checklist of all essentials that you must pack for 7 days in Scotland in the list below.

Essential Planning Tips for Your Alaska Itinerary 7 Days

Best time to visit Alaska

Travelling to Alaska is highly influenced by its distinct seasons, including winter, spring, fall, and summer. Each season offers a unique experience to visitors, making it worthwhile to explore Alaska in different colours.

In general, the optimal time to visit Alaska is from May to September, during the summer season. This period offers a multitude of open activities, bustling attractions, and the opportunity to witness the enchanting phenomenon of the midnight sun. If you plan to take boat trips in Kenai Fjords, it is advisable to make advance reservations as cruises and boat excursions tend to sell out quickly during the summer months.

Additionally, it is important to note that hotel rates in Alaska tend to be higher during the busy summer season. However, you can mitigate this by booking your accommodations well in advance. By securing your lodging ahead of time, you can take advantage of better prices and ensure a comfortable stay during your visit to Alaska.

If your interests lie in dog sledging, skiing, and witnessing the mesmerizing Northern Lights, I highly recommend planning your trip to Alaska during the winter season. This period offers the ideal conditions to indulge in winter-based activities and capture the beauty of the Northern Lights.

Health & Safety

With a valid COVID-19 vaccination certificate, you can enter the state of Alaska. Since this is uncertain and no one can predict unforeseen situations – I recommend you stay updated with these COVID-19 guidelines. I’ll also keep this section as updated as possible to provide accurate information on any travel restrictions.

How much does it cost

An approximate cost of this 7-day Alaska itinerary will be around $1800-$2100. However, the prices of this tour will be heavily dependent on the activities you book experiences you indulge in and the kind of accommodation you select. Through our partnership programs with various travel companies, we make it easy for you to book preferred activities & entry-ticket fees at much cheaper costs.

Detailed 7 Day Alaska Itinerary

Day 1: Juneau

Arrive at Juneau.

Juneau, a beloved town in Alaska, serves as an excellent starting point for this exciting Alaskan journey. Many visitors exploring Alaska via cruise ships make it a pit stop during their voyage. Travellers often disembark in Juneau, take a few hours to wander around the town, and then return to their ship.

However, the Alaskan capital deserves more than just a fleeting visit. It’s a destination that rewards those who take the time to explore its wonders at a leisurely pace. Juneau’s landscapes seem to stretch out endlessly, encompassing snow-capped peaks, gushing streams, vibrant bursts of wildflowers, and vast scenic routes.

While intrepid adventurers may delve deep into the stunning settings of Glacier Bay National Park and Admiralty Island National Monument, even leisure-focused travellers will find eye-catching scenery right at Juneau’s doorstep.

During your time in Juneau, you will have the opportunity to explore two of the most renowned glacier routes: Mendenhall Glacier and Tracy Arm Fjord. This impressive start to our 7-day Alaska itinerary will ensure that you make the most of your travel experience in the capital city.

Excursion to Mendenhall Glacier

Located just 12 miles away from Juneau, Mendenhall Glacier stands as one of the most popular and frequently visited glaciers in Alaska. Drawing in around 400,000 tourists annually, its appeal extends beyond its mesmerizing arctic beauty, leaving visitors captivated by its grandeur.

Both Adventure Bound Alaska and Allen Marine Tours operate frequent excursions to Mendenhall Glacier. Upon your arrival, you will be presented with a 15-minute short film showcasing its stunning landscape, features, and other characteristics. With the help of a forest ranger, you can select from a range of trails to explore Mendenhall. This lets you discover the world’s only ‘drive-up’ glacier excitingly.

Among the notable trails in the area, such as Nugget Falls, Photo Point Trail, and Steep Creek Trail, the East Glacier Trail stands out as a personal favorite and comes highly recommended. Essential Planning Tips for 10 Days in Alaska

Best time to visit Alaska

When planning your trip to Alaska, the best time to visit largely depends on your preferences and the activities you wish to partake in. The summer months of May to September are generally considered the best time to visit, as the weather is milder and the days are longer. This allows for a wider range of outdoor activities such as hiking, wildlife viewing, and exploring national parks.

However, it’s worth noting that summer is also the peak tourist season in Alaska, and popular destinations can be crowded and more expensive. If you prefer to avoid the crowds and have a more budget-friendly experience, you might consider visiting during the shoulder seasons

Health & Safety

At the current time of writing, Alaska is open for tourists to enter the state. A full valid COVID-19 vaccine certification will be required, along with any other mentioned documents. Since this is uncertain, I recommend you follow the COVID-19 guidelines.

How much does it cost

If you plan to book this 10 day Alaska itinerary, then a similar version of this layout is available on G Adventures. It can roughly cost you around $2100-$2300. However, the activities mentioned on their website is different from what we cover below. But, through our partnership programs with various travel companies, we make it easy for you to book preferred activities & entry-ticket fees at much cheaper costs.

After a scenic ride, you’ll arrive at Alpine Creek Lodge. Indulge in a delicious meal at this charming rustic roadhouse before embarking on optional activities recommended by your guide. Alternatively, you can choose to skip these tours and simply unwind while exploring the wonders of Denali National Park at your own pace.

Overnight at Denali.

Day 9: Denali National Park – Anchorage

Depart from Denali NP to travel back to Anchorage.

Before returning to Anchorage, you’ll have plenty of time to explore Denali National Park at your own leisure. I would not recommend hiking, as it may make your later journey more tiring. Instead, consider embarking on a scenic flight adventure to truly appreciate the breathtaking views of the park from above.

This fully-guided plane excursion will traverse across major Alaskan peaks such as – Hunter, Foraker, and Denali. Witness massive glaciers forming both sides of the mountain, with Kahiltna Glacier covering a major distance. You can even upgrade your tour for a glacier landing experience to witness these soaring peaks up close.

Post your exploration, it’s time to head back to Anchorage.

The rest of your evening is kept free and can be explored hunting good restaurants or pubs.

Overnight in Anchorage.

Day 10: Anchorage

Depart from Anchorage.

This concludes your Alaska road trip itinerary. However, if you wish to extend your journey and explore other popular towns in Alaska such as Juneau, Skagway, and Glacier Bay, you can refer to our related post for a detailed itinerary based on these destinations. Happy travels!

Where to Stay in Alaska

Alaska is home to tons of the best hotels, lodges, and cabin/house rentals. Choosing the right one, according to the locations you stay at could be overwhelming. However, it all comes to individual preference, style, and budget.

When you travel to other destinations within North America, you often think of selecting hotels based on type, location, amenities, and price. But, when it comes to choosing accommodation for your Alaska trip, there are other trendy things to consider.

Some Alaskan lodges give you a perfect front-row viewing experience of the wilderness & landscape. While B&Bs in Alaska give you the local cultural touch. Then, there are forest lodges that typically come with day-tour/ multi-trip packages, including bear-viewing, fishing, or nature walks.

All these become a part of the Alaskan specialty when you choose to stay in the state. As per the reports provided by Alaska tourism, the average room rate for an economic hotel (June through August) is $175. Mid-range hotels can come between $200-$275 and $350+ for luxury stays.

This is just an indicative price of what you can expect, how much you can shell out, and which budgeted range to target for hotels.

To make your work simpler in researching the right hotel stays for you – please find the below categories distinguished as budgeted, mid-range & luxury stay. Upon visiting these links, you can further drill down hotels into each of the locations mentioned in our 10 day Alaska itinerary.

Budget Hotels in Alaska – You can find many rental home options, B&B, and hostels in Alaska. Find out more about what category suits you best.

Mid-range Hotels in Alaska – If you can up the price a little bit, you will find decent hotel stays across Alaska. Especially, in cities like Anchorage, mid-range hotels are in plenty with discounts & other offers.

Luxury Hotels in Alaska – The luxury word is quite a synonym to Alaska. Considering the types of eco-friendly lodges & cabins, you’ll surely find a perfect luxurious stay in Alaska.

What to Pack for Alaska Itinerary

Whether you’re road-tripping or exploring via cruise ship, one thing you should take care off is the state being extremely cold. You will need to carry enough warm clothes, especially if you’re prone to cold weather. Layers are key to keeping yourself warm in this uncertain Alaskan weather. Wear layers as per your comfort level and remove them when you trek/climb during hikes.

Essential Planning Tips for 10 Days in Europe

Let’s look at some of the important planning tips & ideas before you kick off your Europe trip. This is just a high-overview of a few essential things that you need to know. But I’ll ensure to drop some links to additional resources.

Best time to visit Europe: Although Europe is a year-round destination, the best months to travel are between June and September. This is where you get the best of all European countries – considering warm temperatures, good sunny climate, and less rainfall.

But, since this 10-day European itinerary consists of traveling to multiple countries – do not expect the weather to be consistent enough across the entire continent. The southernmost parts of Europe are generally warm, compared to the northern countries.

Having said that, you can definitely travel as per the below-suggested itinerary from June to September.

Health & Safety: Considering that we live in the pandemic era today, Europe is not a COVID-free continent. Expect different travel restrictions as per each country’s guidelines & protocols. Since rules and regulations constantly keep changing, it’s best advised to read Europe’s COVID-19 updates.

Visa & Documentation: Visa requirements will differ from country to country. Places like Germany, France, and Belgium will require a valid Schengen Visa. A separate Visa will need to be issued to travel to Ireland. Please read the documentation here to know about your country’s requirements.

What to pack for the Europe trip: I have covered this section later in this guide. Essential items like a jacket, warm clothes, full-sleeve shirts, and cotton pants & jeans must be carried. Also, do consult your family doctor for any medications you will require on-tour. A detailed prescription may be required for the same.

How much does a Europe trip cost: An average 10 day trip to Europe can cost you somewhere around $1600-$2200. This is just an indication based on previous travelers’ data. Your entire tour cost will heavily depend on the activities you book, excursions you take, and the kind of accommodation you choose for each location.

Additionally, your travel expenses, meal costs, and daily miscellaneous can either lower or hike your entire tour cost.

Pro Tip: To save money on this 10 day Europe itinerary, try to book budgeted stays/ cheap hostels. The money you save can be further utilized for guided tour excursions and attraction tickets. This way you can maximize your budget & travel accordingly.

While the history buffs and architectural admirers will love Dublin, its scenic journeys and stunning landscapes will even excite you! It’s best made for travelers who prefer road trips, county travel, and campervan journeys.

Accommodation for 10 Days in Europe

Planning Tips for Colombia 9 Day Itinerary

Before I get to the itinerary, it’s essential to understand a few important planning tips before planning any Colombian trips. This is just a high-overview, but I’ll ensure to link you through some additional resources & helpful guides.

Best time to visit Colombia: The best time to tour Colombia is December through March. Generally, these are the driest months in the Andes, and however, this is often the busiest period. Considering Christmas in December and Easter in March/April – the influx of tourists may be at its peak. Flight tickets & hotel rates will be on the expensive side, but if booked in advance, then you’ll save some money. Alternatively, you can also plan your Colombia itinerary from March to September. You can expect rainfall constantly, but it won’t be a tickling issue.

Health & Safety: Colombia is a safe country. Its often misunderstood that Colombia still lives in its dark zone of cartels and drug lords. However, things have changed now, and the government has become a safer place for welcoming tourists. Follow the guidelines for whichever activity/tour you book through any operator.

Visa & Documentation: Visa requirements will differ from country to country. But, all nations will require a valid passport (6 months of minimum validity) to enter Colombia. Citizens of the U.S won’t need a Colombian visa to enter the country, and a valid U.S passport will be the only requirement.

How much does it cost: If you’re planning your 9 days in Colombia during the holiday season, prices may almost be twice as indicated. However, an average week’s vacation can cost you around $1100 – $1500. This depends on your travel stay, experiences you book, transfer costs, and other daily expenses. Accommodations play a crucial role in deciding the price fluctuation, and the type of stay you book can lower your total cost or dramatically increase it. Below, I’ll suggest a few stay options to help you sort your hotels for this 9 day Colombia itinerary.

Detailed 9 Day Colombia Itinerary

Day 1: Bogota

Bogota, the capital of Colombia, is truly a stunning city. Most people often bypass the capital city to see ‘other cooler’ places. But if you know this city well, you may also be aware that Bogota is home to tons of museums, parks, walking tours, nightlife culture, and delicious food scenes. You can choose to explore some of them in a guided city tour or spend an extra day leisurely strolling around the streets.

No matter what you do in Bogota, there are countless reasons to visit this vibrant city. Since this itinerary accommodates only one night in Bogota – I’ve tried to include some of the top-recommended activities. Also, apart from the ones mentioned below, you can choose plenty of optional tours.

Top things to do in Bogota for day one –

Go on a walking tour – The best advice I could give you to explore Bogota – is to take a free walking tour. Yes, it won’t cost you any money, and the advantage is that you’re entirely under the control of which places to see or skip. Freetour has a great walking tour collection that takes you on a journey to some of Bogota’s classic attractions. Learn from the tour expert about inspiring stories of cultural and historical influence on the city. Discover iconic places like – Botero MuseumGolden One MythShooting SquareCultural AvenueFoundation Square, and Justice Palace Seige. This free walking tour includes other prominent places, so go check them out!

Salt Cathedral Tour – Rated as Colombia’s number one attraction, visit the Zipaquira Salt Cathedral to understand the unique process of salt formation and mining. This is quite an exciting tour, but it will require six hours of your day (including traveling). Zipaquira Salt Cathedral is a place of worship and an architectural masterpiece. The Salt Cathedral is built underground, 600-ft deep within the mine’s remaining caverns and tunnels. Inside, you will find a variety of sculptures and monuments of different sizes preserved. This tour will make you remarkably visit the Cathedral’s most important highlights. This means it’s worth considering a day trip to the Zipaquira Salt Cathedral when in Bogota.

Visit Iglesia de San Fransisco – San Fransisco Church is one of the oldest churches in Bogota, with an uncannily interior and artistically decorated 17th-century altar. The entry fee is free, and it’s worth paying a visit.

Day 2: Bogota – Armenia

Today, you will travel to Armenia from Bogota. Before jumping on your afternoon flight, visit the famous Paloquemao market.

Of course, Colombia is home to many supermarket giants like Wal-Mart or K-Mart, but nothing can beat the experience of buying wares from a traditional market. Paloquemao is frequently visited by tourists, residents, and chefs alike to sell/purchase various products. Touring this market also ensures that you get the best Colombian authenticity through different items and souvenirs. Explore local market stalls, flower shops, boutiques, and cafes and determine your route to venture through this unique market.

If you want to have a short visit to Cocora, you can visit only the central valley of Wax Palms, and it will take you about half an hour. However, for those who wish to enjoy the actual hike, take the classic five-hour trail leading through the Cocora Valley.

Later, enjoy exploring the town of Salento.

Day 5: Salento – Medellin

Today, drive through the beautiful scenic route of Colombia’s landscapes to reach Medellin.

The journey to Medellin is quite hectic, as it can take anywhere between 6-7 hours to reach. Hence, considering the traveling part, no activities are planned.
