Byron Bay Itinerary: How to Spend 2 Days in Byron Bay

on

Explore a coastal paradise within Australia in our Byron Bay Itinerary

The beautiful coastal town of Byron Bay has well and truly shaken off the hipster culture in Australia. Each year, the city drives more than a million travellers to engage in its sunny-sea escapades to relax, unwind, and restore. In today’s modern world, Byron Bay has beautifully flourished into an evergreen coastal paradise featuring lo-fi wine bars, incredible gastronomy scenes, inventive cafés, and stunning natural settings.

If you had asked me a year ago, ‘Is Byron Bay worth visiting?‘, I would’ve answered a NO, calling it an overrated destination. But I’m freakingly feeling so glad that I got proved wrong! Byron Bay is neither overrated nor too sophisticated, but rather is an upscaled version of what the word ‘paradise‘ means. It certainly lives up to all those expectations you might have already heard about this beachfront town.

Today, I happily call it my favourite town in New South Wales. Basis on that, I came up with a short yet simple itinerary that can summarize the charm and calm of Byron Bay. This guide is all about taking you on a journey through a classic 2-day Byron Bay itinerary.

Overview of Byron Bay Itinerary

The itinerary designed for our Byron Bay trip is for 2 days. Ideally, I suggest spending three to four days in Byron Bay to explore its major attractions, famous beaches, incredible experiences, and unique activities. However, given that you have more time to spare – you can also plan a week’s itinerary for Byron Bay.

In our version of the Byron Bay tour, I included some of the town’s most regional experiences and activities. These include exploring the markets, understanding the local culture, meeting farmers & producers, visiting famous beaches & lighthouses, and day-tripping to the hinterland. Other than the ones mentioned, I also listed some of the optional places to be included (if you were to extend your itinerary).

In the below-designed itinerary, I ensured the activities suggested are open to all age groups. Thus, making this trip a pure family-friendly weekend getaway.

Byron Bay Itinerary for 2 Days

Day 1 | Markets, Beaches & Cape Byron Lighthouse

Get to Know Local Markets

Byron Bay is filled with lively markets, local culture, incredible culinary scenes, and friendly-welcoming people. With such a diverse range of experiences, it’s obvious to find yourself overwhelmed by the city’s charm. Hence, to make your day one in Byron Bay super-fun filled – I’ll introduce you to the city’s most precious gems.

Byron Bay is a central hub for all talented creatives to engage in their local community markets. It’s the city’s biggest strength – driving thousands of tourists annually to interact with the local sellers, farmers and artisans. From farm-fresh produce to varietals of meat, antique collectors and jewellery makers, Byron Bay beautifully boasts its market scenes to all locals and tourists alike.

The Chanon and Bangalow host popular markets every week in the area. Here you can spend some time, meet locals, buy interesting souvenirs, and learn fascinating insights from their day-to-day routine. You can obviously get lost in the world of Byron Bay’s diverse markets, but allow 2-3 hours of your morning time to explore.

Byron Bay Beaches

From patrolled and dog-friendly beaches to isolated coves near the town, Byron Bay houses a 30km stretch of beaches. It’s one of the places in Australia where you appreciate every minute spent, rather than thinking of what to do and which activities to book. Byron Bay’s beaches are worth exploring cometh any season. No matter when you travel, these beaches will always offer you a sense of a paradisical world that’s meant to be cherished.

While Byron Bay is home to plenty of glistening beaches, I recommend visiting the famous ones first. These include Main BeachLittle Wategos BeachTallow Beach, and Clarkes Beach. Many of these beaches have great coffee shops and little restaurants.

Honestly, you can never get enough of exploring these beaches in Byron Bay. I have literally seen people spending a week’s vacation only to swim & surf on one of the beaches of Byron Bay. They rather prefer booking beachfront accommodation and spend a long-filled itinerary fulfiling their water-bound adventures. On the other hand, Byron Bay not only offer you the best swimming and surfing spots in the area but also beautiful coastal tracks to stroll and enjoy views. It’s definitely a win-win situation for those who are afraid of waters and can spend an alternative way of enjoying a serene Byron Bay.

You could take boat trips between June and October to see humpback whales in action. They usually come around this period to migrate and are often seen in plenty with their bunch. You can book your day trips for whale-watching from here.

Cape Byron Lighthouse

Perched atop the easterly point of mainland Australia, Cape Byron Lighthouse stands as the city’s iconic landmark. This place is also one of the highlights of your Byron Bay itinerary. As you embark on a sweet hike to soak in panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, you’ll find yourself in one of the best spots to admire Byron Bay’s beauty. Being one of the town’s most visited attractions, the place is often a bit crowded to explore. However, with an early morning visit, you could beat the crowds too.

Constructed at the turn of the 19th century, the Cape Byron Lighthouse was built to guide ships passing along the coast. It was maintained and organized by its resident keepers till 1989, after which the light got its new automation system.

Once you reach this place, you can find a plethora of things to do around. Take a guided tour of the Lighthouse Maritime Museum to learn about the historical insights of the Lighthouse and the town, or go atop the stairs to find yourself amidst a 360-degree view of the entire Pacific and Hinterland region. The Cape Byron Lighthouse is also a popular spot to do whale-watching, and you can see those whales clearly passing through the coast from the top. Furthermore, the Lighthouse also serves as an excellent spot to watch sunrise and sunset, and it’s instead the best time to appreciate the views.

Day 2 | Byron Bay’s Hinterland

The beautiful beaches often drive the most tourists to Byron Bay, but many travellers ultimately find their sweet vacation spot amidst the greenery of the hinterland. The region is well-known for its historic villages, lush-green farms, rolling hills, and panoramic lookouts. The contrasting scenes of Byron Bay’s laid-back lifestyle to a subtle countryside exploration make you wonder about the amazing diversity of this region.

The hinterland is a perfect place to wash the urban stress of the busy city life. As you embark through its country roads, you’ll discover friendly people, numerous eco-friendly resorts, exciting restaurants, traditional communities, and a hamlet of picturesque villages. All this scenery packed in one region almost makes you feel that you’re mesmerizing in a fairytale world.

Some of the notable things to do here include taking a summit hike to the Wollumbin Mount Warning. It isn’t the easiest of hikes to take in the hinterland; however, your efforts will be repaid soon with the panoramic views on the top, stretching from the lush-green farms in the west to the oceans in the east. Just closer to the village of Federal, you’ll find one of the hinterland’s precious gems: Minyon Falls. With easily accessible boardwalks and well-maintained roads, you can get close up to this 100m waterfall. You can also take short hikes around the falls, which venture deep into the escarpment landscapes of the hinterland.

As much as I want you to explore the inland region of Byron by yourself, I also recommend taking a guided tour of the hinterland. This 6-hour-long excursion takes you to admirable places within the backcountry, including ancient rainforests, the Nightcap National Park and old settlement areas.

How to Extend your Byron Bay Itinerary

Feel like 2 days isn’t enough? Do you want to stretch your 2-day Byron Bay itinerary to a couple more days? Look at my below suggestions, which also includes some of the Gold Coast’s attractions –

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary: Byron Bay’s itinerary may sound incomplete without a visit to its nearby famous attraction – Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. It was a hard choice not to include this in our 2-day itinerary, but it is still a worthwhile place to visit if you extend your stay. The sanctuary is spread across an area of 27-hectare, with over 1400 native wildlife. With species like kangaroos, koalas, red pandas, lemurs, echidnas, wombats, and dingoes, the place is a perfect place to get up close with Australian-friendly natives. Find out more here.

Moreton Island Day-Trip: Moreton might be a little farther from Byron Bay for a day trip, but it’s definitely worth it if you enjoy coastal paradise. Fringed by clear blue waters, dunes, and sparkly beaches – Moreton is one of the best places near Brisbane for a weekend getaway. With the help of this guided tour, you can go whale-watching, spot famous shipwrecks, and discover the magical world of Tangalooma Wrecks. Visit this page to find out more.

Surfers Paradise: It’s definitely a hard miss to visit one of the iconic surfing spots of Australia – Surfers Paradise. While this may be a dream for many to surf at this location, it’s also one of the best places in the Gold Coast to do local activities and experiences. You could spend two or three days at Surfers Paradise, learning about surfing, visiting beachfront markets, local shops, award-winning restaurants, boutiques, and bars & nightclubs. Also, if you make it to Surfers Paradise, do not miss its adventurous attraction – the SkyPoint Climb.

Where to Stay in Byron Bay

When it comes to beachside escape, it doesn’t get better than Byron Bay. With accommodations ranging from budget to luxury, nestling between the shimmering beaches and lush rolling hinterland, staying in Byron Bay has to be one of the most unforgettable moments.

Accommodation in Byron Bay is truly meant for everyone who appreciates the serene landscape. You don’t necessarily have to book a luxurious stay to soak in the tranquillity of the area, but rather a simple, decent hotel can fulfil most of your dreamy spires. Whatever your preference might be – beachfront, budgeted hostels, ecological resorts, cabins, and B&B stays – you’ll find the best of the hotels on the proper budget.

Some of my recommendations include staying at –

Cape Byron Retreat: Nestled amidst the hinterland of Byron Bay, this retreat is one of the best-budgeted places to consider for your Byron Bay itinerary. The 2-bedroom private apartment offers unparalleled views of the Mt Warning, followed by a luxurious well-being spa, outdoor hot tub, and fire pit. Some of Byron Bay’s best beaches are just minutes from Cape Byron Retreat.

Aaman & Cinta Luxury Guesthouse & Villas: If you fancy a luxury stay, then Aaman & Cinta guesthouses should be your preferred choice. Each of these villas has several guesthouses featuring spacious king-sized beds, balconies, kitchen amenities and other services.

Crystalbrook Byron: Based in the tropical rainforest region of Byron Bay, Crystalbrook Byron is one of the best luxury resorts. Being regularly named under ‘top 10 luxury resorts of Byron Bay’, this hotel spoils everyone with its high-end amenities and glorious in-house activities. A 5-minute walk from your hotel leads you to a private beach.
